CityRoots is a grant program that provides assistance to volunteer-led community groups who want to improve the physical environment of their neighborhood's yards, streets and parks. The McCormack Civic Association applied for such a grant and has been successful in their attempts. The grant will be used to beautify the neglected lot located at the corner of Washburn, Howell and Dorchester Avenue.

A CityRoots grant provides:

A Community Project Coordinator who works with your group to help organize meetings, involve more community members, build your vision, design, select and implement your project, and provide resources and consultants as necessary. (Karen Chaffee)

Project materials and supplies, such as tools to share, food and materials for community meetings, trees, shrubs, soil, mulch, compost, rain barrels, materials to build rain gardens, compost bins, etc., as needed for your project.

Workshops, trainings and resources on topics such as home energy and water savings, green roofs, soil remediation, tree identification and pruning, low-impact landscaping, community organizing, and other sustainable living topics as desired.

Meetings occur weekly at the Sugarbowl at 7pm (except on 7/22 we will meet at 6:30 at the DHS, 195 Boston Street). The meetings are used to plan, create and eventually design a new pocket park for this area. So please come and meet your neighbors and get involved!

The below attachments provide progress on the park. Please contact the McCormack Civic at civic@mccormackcivic.com for comments/questions or updates.

Thanks

We had a large crew today who worked super hard to complete the job of planting six additional trees and a Rose of Sharon at Sharon's Park. The first tree was planted this past Monday.

It was a fantastic community effort from the dedicated and knowledgeable staff of City Roots, our committed and hard working business people and our caring and enthusiastic residents. Thanks to you all. Those who were not involved today, please go down and take a look.

Gratefully,

Mike
